School, council take stand against pesticides

Two separate, but related, actions last week were noteworthy in achieving the goals of the Healthy Olympia Task Force, a group formed in January 2004 to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals in South Sound.

Two separate, but related, actions last week were noteworthy in achieving the goals of the Healthy Olympia Task Force, a group formed in January 2004 to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals in South Sound.

Students, parents and volunteers at Roosevelt Elementary School in Olympia put the finishing touches on a Waterwise Garden on the school playgrounds that will be pesticide-free, water-efficient, a haven for birds, bees and butterflies, and a place for students to gather and study nature.

Earlier in the week, the Olympia City Council approved a plan to limit the use of pesticides in city parks through adoption of an integrated pest management plan. ...
