Event Intern

We have an opening for an event intern for summer through fall 2008. The event intern will work directly with the Membership and Event Manager on our eighth annual “Auction for Action,” WTC’s premier fundraising event.

For twenty-seven years Washington Toxics Coalition (WTC) has been a statewide and national leader in efforts to prevent toxic pollution. Since our inception we have achieved a series of groundbreaking victories to protect public health.

We have an opening for an event intern for summer through fall 2008.  The event intern will work directly with the Membership and Event Manager on our eighth annual “Auction for Action,” WTC’s premier fundraising event. Responsibilities   include recruiting, coordinating, training, and supervising volunteers for this special event, phoning businesses for auction donations, picking up auction items, and offering administrative support before, during, and after the event.

We are asking for a twelve week commitment from July 28, 2008 through October 17, 2008 at a minimum of 10 hours per week. Applicants interested in a shorter commitment will also be considered.

The intern will gain and/or improve upon his or her:

  • Volunteer coordination skills.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Understanding of fundraising for an environmental non-profit.
  • Knowledge of toxics issues.
  • Direct solicitation skills.
  • Knowledge of how to organize a highly successful auction and dinner celebration.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is highly motivated, enjoys multi-tasking, and who is comfortable on the phone and with face-to-face communication. Applicants should care about toxics issues, have a desire to help out an excellent organization, and be interested in learning all aspects of event related work. Driver’s license required.

To apply:

Submit cover letter, resume, and references by July 11, 2008 to Darrin Gunkel, Membership and Event Manager, Washington Toxics Coalition, 4649 Sunnyside Avenue North, Suite 540, Seattle, Washington 98103 or to dgunkel@watoxics.org. With the passage of the Children’s Safe Product Act here in Washington state this past April, we now have the nation’s strongest protections on lead, cadmium, and phthalates in toys and other kids products. Fortunately, Congress in the other Washington has taken notice and is considering strengthening protections for the rest of the country. To make sure that Washington’s standards remain in force, it’s crucial that the federal legislation allow states to have stronger toy protections for their kids if they choose.
